The National Institute of Ophthalmology (NIO), the academic arm of the Tun Hussein Onn National Eye Hospital (THONEH), was established to provide quality education and undertake research work.

Its vision is to promote excellence in the sphere of continuing medical education and make available better eye-care in Malaysia and the neighbouring countries.

Under the NIO, the School of Optometry is currently offering a specially- designed 4+0 year programme, bachelor of Science in Optometry (BS Optometry), in collaboration with The Birla Institute of Technology & Science – Pilani, India (BITS-Pilani).

Global demographic trends have made optometry one of the largest independent healthcare professions. It offers a variety of areas of specialisation to serve the community in identifying and treating preventable blindness.

The Institute’s mission is to create a pool of competent and self-reliant optometrists who can do more than just prescribe glasses and contact lenses. Being in the frontline of eye-care, they can help avert eye diseases and create public awareness on matters of vision.

The BS Optometry degree programme is approved by The Ministry of Higher Education by The Ministry of Higher Education and Malaysian Qualifications Agency (MQA).

This Course offers the only integrated hospital-based programme with direct patient-care in Malaysia. Student will be exposed to state of the art equipment and clinical facilities of THONEH. The entry requirements for this programme are STPM, A-Level or equivalent.
