To start with, it is important that you know what a degree is. A university degree is an award given to a student who has completed the basic syllabus of a specific field. Depending on the field of study you are interested in, the duration of a degree differs. So all the important things that you need to know prior to embarking into a degree are listed below.
First and foremost, know what you are interested in. The difference between a university degree and a professional course is that a the latter is sometimes shorter and it allows you to sort of get some working experience. In obtaining your degree, the classes are less flexible as most universities usually require you to complete your course full time before you start working. This is probably because the mentality of a degree is that you have to complete the course in order to be ready for the job market, but professional courses adopts the concept that they are industry-oriented hence you are encouraged to know the corporate life. So if you are interested in medicine, then you must identify the areas which you are good at or what you want to do, this is because once you start a degree course, it is difficult to change later, although it is still possible.
If you are not sure of what you want to do first, then you can always get into a degree course via the pre-university qualifications like the “A” Levels and such. The only difference here perhaps is the time taken as a foundation course is usually shorter. After pre-university, you will then have to decide which pathway you want to take. Ensure that you know which major you want to be in because every different course requires a different timeframe to complete. The rule of thumb is that degree courses usually take a minimum of 3 years not taking into account the foundation or pre-university years. Architecture and medicine courses usually requires more and would take at least 5 years to complete.
There are many universities around the country which offers all types of courses and you must conduct your own research to find out which institute offers which best courses. Over the next few sections we will ‘educate’ you with what each of these courses have to offer and which institute or university are the renowned ones which you can enroll into.
