One of the most sought after courses in the industry these days, Multimedia degrees are seen and perceived as fun and very ‘interesting’. Most students believe that Multimedia degrees enable you to find jobs in areas like animation, 3D and gaming, which to a certain extent true and to another extent not true. This is because, the area of multimedia is very large with various types of specialization. Perhaps the most common majors in Multimedia are design and programming.
Most computing degrees encompass the technical parts of multimedia. This means that if you are interested in the technical areas of multimedia which involves a lot of programming and algorithms, then this is the course for you, otherwise if you are more into the gaming and movie making aspects then you are more suited for the design courses. In Multimedia programming, you will have to be very good with programming and technical analysis of how characters work. Programming in multimedia is similar to programming which you learn in other computing areas, but in these areas, you are more concerned about the behavior of characters. Generally, Multimedia programmers uses the languages like Java and C++ but you must also be able to grasp the more design-based languages like Maya and Lingo.
Prior to applying languages, you must also be able to master designing packages like Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Dreamweaver and such all of which will assist you in your designs. Packages like these though are taught in length and used extensively if you are in Multimedia design. You will also learn 3D studio Max and Maya where you will be designing character animation and such. If you are involved in movie making and video editing, packages like Adobe Premier, Macromedia Director are the common packages taught.
Of course, to excel in the multimedia degree, you will need some creativity to go with it. While this is not something which can be ‘taught’, you will be exposed to areas like lateral and creative thinking in your first year where you can explore ideas and learn to create storyboards which are essentials in designing your own multimedia productions. Digital design and development will be covered in the later sections and where this is concerned, games design as well, but in the multimedia computing areas, you must make no mistake that it is not all about playing games but is more about mastering the languages used in creating products and spaces like Virtual reality and 3D animation.
