The degree in Computer Science used to be one of the most sought after qualifications for anyone planning to enter the IT world. It goes with different names like Computing as well as Information Technology. In most cases, Computer Science refers to the general areas of IT which means you will be trained and taught on the basics of IT.
One of the most important elements that you should be good at when pursuing a degree in Computer Science is mathematics. This is not so much about calculations but more on the logic thinking and algorithmic analysis of problem solving. This is because Computer Science refers a lot to the technical part of the discipline. To say the least, a lot of pre-conception about this area of specialization is that it creates a very technical graduate. That means, you must appreciate the concepts of programming and databases in order to excel.
If you are a people person, which means that you like dealing with people and analyzing business processes and operations, then perhaps this is not the course for you. To graduate this course, you must be ready to sit in front of the computer for long hours and solving problems, writing programs for the companies which will require automation. You will have to leave the ‘talking’ and ‘analysis’ parts to those with other degrees like Business Information Technology or Information Systems.
Most courses in Computer Science are conducted in English Language which means that your command of this language must be good or at least at the acceptable level in order to grasp the concepts and methodologies adopted. Apart from that, mathematical concepts are essential so that you can understand the logic behind all the calculations used in the computer and its systems.
In a Computer Science degree, you will learn the fundamental concepts of computing like the way it operates, how storage and processors work and such. On top of that, you will also learn about all the different facets of computing like designing databases and more importantly programming. This is usually one of the areas which most graduates look to avoid because it is perceived as boring and difficult, but if you are good with programming, then the future looks very good. Programmer and systems analysts will find jobs that pay very well and stable.
