The area of Information Technology has been around for many years now. In the past, IT was one of the most sought after qualifications in the world probably because of the fact that the certificate was difficult to obtain as well as being very scarce. The thing about IT degrees previously is that it used to be a highly scientific discipline. So much of the landscape had changed today and hence you will find that these degrees are now made available by most educational institutions around the world.
In the mid 1990s onwards, with the advent of the Internet and more and more importance being stressed in market competition and technology, the demand of IT graduates and experts suddenly outgrew the supply and hence most universities began offering courses in this discipline to meet the vigorous demands of the market. Therefore you will find that up until the early 2000s, IT graduates have been steadily entering the market to take up jobs not only in technology companies but has began taking up employment in all other companies as well. The good thing about graduating with an IT degree is that these skills have now become part and parcel of most companies, very much like the way accounting have been.
Today, the IT market is very much saturated as compared to 10 years ago with companies looking for graduates not only in the technical fields but are also good in areas like people communications, business processes and system analysis. This means that you not only need to be able to grasp the various technical aspects of computing like Databases, Programming and such but would be required to be analytical in terms of understanding business processes and operations as well as in other areas like data gathering and the transferring of these terms into business languages.
There are many different streams or majors in the IT field which will be covered throughout the next few sections. There are in general different types of areas in IT like Software Engineering, Web-based disciplines, Multimedia, Networking Communications and the conventional Computer Science. We will start with the generic Computer Science degrees to explain to you what you stand to learn and the career opportunities in the market.
