The CIM course structure and content

What do you learn in the CIM?
One thing for sure, a qualified marketer will be a CIM certificate holder. Which level will he or she graduate from depends largely on how far you would want to chart your career. But before you decide that your future lies with the marketing, you must first identify which area of interest you would like to venture into. Bear in mind that despite knowing this and hearing it numerous times, Sales and Marketing and Promotions are all different disciplines altogether. So you must be sure what you want to do before embarking further. We will start a new series on the different disciplines next week, for now we assume you know what you want to do prior to studying for the CIM.

So if you know the difference between Sales and Marketing, and the latter is what you want to do then CIM is a great pathway to follow. Know for sure that in Marketing you are more involved in strategizing and not in selling products. So you will find that the modules here usually involves a lot of planning and such.

There are various qualifications provided by the CIM, the most common ones being the Professional Certificate in Marketing, Professional Diploma in Marketing and Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing. Make no mistake that these courses have undergone years of research to maintain its relevance and to ensure that it is contemporary enough so that you are well equipped for what is expected in the industry. Each of these levels will train you in the 6 key competencies which are Research and analysis, Planning, Brand management, Implementing marketing programmes, managing marketing people and measuring the effectiveness of marketing all of which are highly strategic and planning oriented.

The most basic level is the Introductory Certificate in Marketing which gives you all you need to know about the fundamentals of marketing and its principals. Once you complete this, you can continue on with the Professional Certificate in Marketing which is more practical and tactical. In the next level, The Professional Diploma in Marketing is more specialized and this is an equivalent to the undergraduate level where you will have to be more analytical and critical. Once you complete that you can choose to continue towards an MBA program or progress to a Chartered Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing which requires you to specialize into one area of marketing.
