After telling you about the various types of professional courses available in the market, we turn our attention to the more ‘academic’ pathways which is the conventional degrees. This is where you will spend, depending on the field you choose about 3 to 4 years of your life trying to obtain what is called in the industry as the “First Degree” or the basic degree.
You would notice by now that degrees used to be very valuable in the past which means one generation ago, in the times of our parents, holding a university degree is considered to be prestigious and put you among the elite and higher classes of society. If you had graduated overseas, it puts you higher still because the pre-conception is that you are either very well off or you must be very smart to obtain a scholarship to study overseas. But if you had graduated from the local public universities, then you must be a smart scholar because not everyone in the country will be able to do so.
In today’s environment, this landscape had changed tremendously. Since the 1990s, degrees had become somewhat a pre-requisite to get a proper job, so to speak. Of course this does not mean that you will not find work if you do not have a degree. But due to the fact that degrees had become easier to obtain because of the competitiveness of the market, it has become one of the most basic qualifications in the industry. With the advent of 3+0 education in Malaysia and the government’s efforts to make the country one of the regional education hubs, more and more universities are offering degree courses and this had become a common culture. Hence a degree is now become too common and people are now heading towards looking at a step higher which is in postgraduates where you will try to obtain a Masters or a Doctorate degree to gain a competitive edge over your peers.
So in the next few sessions, you will be able to find out more about what each of these courses seek to offer you and what you will stand to receive upon completion.
