    Professional courses choices

In our previous part, we explained the importance of choosing the area of industry you want to work in before choosing your professional course. The most common ones which you might have heard of by now would be the accounting courses like ACCA, CIMa and LCCI while those in computing include NCC, A+ certification and CCNA while if you are into marketing, then there is the CIM. What exactly those all these means, we will explain in later sections.
In professional courses, you are usually more exposed to industry-related assignments and real world case studies which becomes more relevant to what you will be facing in the real working world as the syllabus are defined and moderated by the experts in the industries. If you pass the qualifications, you have an advantage as your knowledge are more contemporary and industry-centric.

For now, you must choose carefully which is the best course you like. This is because in every industry, there are the micro-areas which you can be part of. Hence, it is very important that upon choosing the industry, you must also choose which part of the industry you want to be in. For instance, in the Information Technology field, assuming that you are interested to pursue a professional course, you can take up the NCC (National Computing Centre) which provides diploma and advance diploma levels but if you are into networking then you can consider the CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Architect) but if you are into more enterprise applications, you can consider the SAP certification. Project Management too is another area of professional course which are fast gaining popularity these days where you can obtain a Certified Project Manager through the PMI (Project Management Institute).

Whatever your choice may be, the most ideal situation here is that you do have some prior fundamental knowledge in the specific area if you want to pursue a professional course, otherwise you might have to struggle a bit. There are pros and cons really, in that if you are in a professional course, should you decide to pursue a degree later, there could be complications especially in terms of module exemptions and advance standings, unless you are taking the more generic course like the NCC diploma which is somewhat equivalent to the degree’s first years. ACCA modules are also exempted in most Accounting degrees which makes your pathways into the degree easier as well.

We will explain what the most common professional courses for fresh high school graduates in our next part.
