As mentioned earlier, if you are thinking of pursuing a degree regardless of which field you are intending to go into, then it is important that you think about how and what options you have after finishing the degree. The most important to be aware of when pursuing a degree is to ensure that you know the field which you are interested in and hence you will be looking to find a job in the specific areas.
The most common issue with a degree is that it prepares you for 2 different pathways upon completion. Of course the first one is to go out and get a job. Degrees essentially provides you with the fundamental theories of a specific area and then the rest you will learn while on the job. The second pathway is to prepare you for postgraduate where you can continue on to pursue your Masters degree.
The reason for this is because as far as a degree is concerned, it is still very much an academic qualification and the learning environment is very much dominantly held in a lecture and class type of place. Hence you will still be very accustomed to places like the library, the research environment and such where a lecturer will guide and coach you throughout the term of your classes.
In undergraduate courses, you not only learn about subjects in one specific area. For instance, if you are taking up a Business Administration degree, you not only learn about marketing, business management or budgeting but you will also be exposed to areas like accounting, computing and perhaps creative thinking, all of which is to provide you with a more holistic understanding of the subject matter. Computing modules are taught in business courses to expose you to manipulating information technology to prepare reports and presentations which are essential for the working life out there. On top of that, such skills are provided so that you are able to finish your degree easier.
Degrees are also designed to develop students to be more interactive and expressive. That means you are trained to become a more extroverted person so that you are do not practice the high school classroom spoon feeding system which you might have been too comfortable with. In short, degree courses do help you to develop your characteristics and in molding you into an adult.
All in all, degree courses are more skewed to give you all the fundamentals you need so that you can survive out there. It does not give you the drill down on the real world yet because it is more a preparatory level which develops your personality and knowledge.
Next up, professional courses.
