Normally, it is very difficult to actually decide which pathway you would like to take especially when you finish SPM and head out towards the pre-university or foundation courses. That is often a bit difficult because whatever you decide, it will shape the future which you will be heading towards. The most important thing about this of course is that you will have to decide prior to taking up a course what you want to do with your future and how you intend to get there.
In most cases, the ‘safest’ thing to do is to actually go through the most convenient pathway which is pre-university and then towards a degree or if you like head out to postgraduate. The degree courses are put in place as a benchmark to measure your level of academic achievement. To say the least, these days, degrees are seen as the minimum qualification for anyone who is looking to land an executive job.
But then again, life is full of choices and alternatives. And wherever possible you want to get to what you are looking for in your career in the shortest time and the least cost possible. So we have the professional courses. If you are not sure what professional courses are, think ACCA and CIMA all of which are considered industry sanctioned qualifications. That means, if you are 100% sure which industry you want to be in and do not want to waste time going through all sorts of university grades and such, you can actually opt to take up one of these courses which will allow you to enter the industry as a so-called ‘professional’.
So you might ask, what are the differences between the two streams of qualifications and why. One of the most important thing you must consider before actually embarking into the next stage of your education is your determination on the industry. Now of course, if you are fully assured that your future is in Marketing, then it is rightful that you can either choose either a degree in Business or a CIM qualification. How sellable are these qualifications and how it will affect your job-hunting later, we will address each of these levels in our next few parts.
