If you do not have 5 credits to gain entry into any pre-university course, then don’t worry as most private institutions would usually have the so-called ‘bridging’ courses which will require a longer time to complete but gets you into the degree pathway nonetheless. These days, diploma courses are conducted solely for that purpose and requires only 3 credits to enter.
Take note that you have to first decide if you are going to take STPM. Of course, it depends largely on your SPM results. If you have the necessary qualifications to pursue Form 6, which means you have all the Credits required with one in Bahasa Malaysia, then you can consider your options. STPM, being a government funded course means that you will be saving your parents a lot of money in tuition fees as compared to doing your pre-university privately. Although it takes 2 years, passing the STPM is no easy feat. So most students would usually consider either STPM or others.
If you decide to take STPM then you might be saving your parents more money when you move towards the degree stages later. But then, should you decide not to continue in a public university probably because the course you are interested in is not offered to you, then you can still opt for a private institution because the STPM is an equivalent to the ‘A’ Levels as well as any other foundation courses.
Another issue which you must consider is the area of interest. If you are determined of the course you intend to take and you would like to do so privately, then you might save a lot more time by enrolling into foundation courses which are preparatory courses for a specific degree later. Otherwise you can consider going into a more generic pre-university course like the ‘A’ levels, the AUSMAT, ADP, SAM and the lot. Bear in mind that although the pre-university courses include the name of the country (for instance, SAM for South Australian Matriculation, ADP for American Degree Program and such), it does not tie you up with the country which the pre-university course awards. Due to the competitive nature of the education today, all the pre-univeristy courses, regardless of their country of origin qualifies you to a degree course in most reputable education centric countries like America, UK, Australia, New Zealand as well as in Malaysia.
