    Pre-University - All Issues Considered

To conclude our series of the many different pre-university courses and what your options are, this is Part 1 of our 4 sections to give you the drill down. You can easily identify that to enroll into any pre-university course, you would first have to possess the necessary pre-requisites. Here, I would like to outline the few important issues which you must know prior to choosing your course.

First and foremost, you are an SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) graduate, or at least its equivalent. If you are a Malaysian, you would have already finished Form 5 and sat for the SPM. In certain cases, you would have finished your ‘O’ levels. This is also applicable for foreigners and if you are from another country. The most important qualification at this stage is any course which is equivalent to the ‘O’ levels. If you are not sure if the qualification you have from your country is recognized or at which level, then you can easily check with the institution you wish to enroll with and their Program Leaders will be able to tell you. Otherwise, a list of qualifications from most countries are also available on the website of the Malaysian Qualification Agency (MQA). You can also click here to view them.

In this level, you are required to have at least 5 Credits, which in most cases must include English Language and Mathematics. Only in certain cases is Mathematics not required but you will notice that English is mandatory. Regardless of what your background is, English is the most important subject which you must have a credit in because all the courses are conducted in the language. This includes lectures and tutorials as well as your assignments, projects and any homework. If you do not have a Credit in English Language, then you might struggle to progress in the course, but in most cases, the institution will require you to sit for a placement test if you do not have a Credit. Wherever is required, you will then have to enroll into an English course in order to help you improve in the language.

On the other hand, Mathematics are required in most pre-university courses as well because it forms the fundamental thinking and problem solving logic in most modules. Whether it is Accounting, Information Technology, Physics or Business Administration, you cannot avoid using Mathematics in your coursework because at this level, a lot of problem solving techniques are applied and used.
