Seen as another option for students who do not wish to continue into STPM for a pathway into public universities, matriculation courses are in many ways one of the best courses which prepares you for the undergraduate years. These are typically a foundation course which provides you with the necessary knowledge you need in a particular stream before you are qualified to take up a degree course.
Background of matriculation courses
If you haven’t already know, matriculation courses have been around for more than 30 years. It was first established to help bumiputra students gain entry into public universities without having to undergo Form 6 where they will have to sit for the STPM (Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia). Where Form 6 is typically a generic course, matriculation is more specified. This means that students will need to decide the course you intend to pursue prior to enrolling into matriculation courses. This has changed nowadays with a 10% allocation provided by the Ministry of Education for the non-bumiputra students.
In taking matriculation courses, you will be trained in a specific area of specialization. You will be required to have a specific set of pre-requisites if you intend to enroll into courses like these. Depending largely in the area which is your interest, you will be required to choose between the Science or Accounting stream. If you choose the Science stream, you must have at least 5 credits in your SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) in the Bahasa Malaysia, English Language, Additional Mathematics and Chemistry papers. On top of that, you should also have at least a credit in either Biology, Physics or a technical paper.
Should you chose to take up Accounting, you will be required to have 5 credits in the Bahasa Malaysia, English Language, Mathematics and very importantly in Accounting with another credit in either your Economics, Science, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Commerce or any other technical papers respectively.
There are various areas of interest in both the Science and Accounting streams where you can choose either Computer Science, Architecture, Medicine, Bio-medicine, Pure Science and Business Administration, Accounting, Economics, Human Resources, Information Technology and Accounting.
As the matriculation courses are conducted by mostly the public universities, the course fees are very affordable as they are government sponsored. It is only in the enrolling in the course which is quite stringent and tedious.
