    Diploma programs

In the past, diploma programs were used as the pre-university course for most degree courses. Some were seen as the stop gap qualification for students who are looking to start a course in a specific area. A diploma course was usually run for one to one and a half years where you can stop from there and start looking for a job. With degrees being offered by most institutions, diploma slowly lost its appeal as more and more people are obtaining degrees which makes the diploma less significant. What more with more pre-university courses which were fast becoming the trend among students, diplomas slowly faded out.

Having said that, diplomas have since become significant again where it is given a new lease of life, particularly students who do not qualify to enroll into any pre-university courses. Diplomas these days are used as bridging courses for students to gain a pathway into degree courses if they are unable to enroll into any pre-university courses due to insufficient credits in SPM or its equivalent. Hence, the pre-requisite to enroll into a diploma course is only 3 credits which must include Mathematics or Science and English Language. Students too are required to obtain at least a pass in Bahasa Malaysia.

There is a wide variety of diploma programs available throughout the country. In most cases, diploma programmes are longer as compared to any pre-university as they can span from 1 to 2 and a half years depending on the course and the institute which offers the course. Diploma programs are more specialized and functions pretty much like a Foundation course and it is required that students go through a longer period of time to complete the course because there are more modules which they must take in order to be ready for the undergraduate level. Courses in diploma includes areas like Information Technology, Business Administration, Engineering and Management, all of which consist of modules which encircle around the specific area of specialization.

For students who would like to get a degree but did not get the necessary 5 credits required for all pre-university courses, this is the best pathway for you. The only issue about diploma courses is that it takes a while longer and that you will need to be sure of what you want to do later.
