International Baccalaureate Program or beter known as IB

Known in short as IB, the International Baccalaureate program is intended for students who are looking to study in European universities. You probably have not heard of this qualification before or have not heard much about it as this is not a common or famous program. The program comes under the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) which is based in Switzerland in Geneva. The International Baccalaureate Curriculum and Assessment which is based in Wales in Cardiff oversees the course structure.

In Malaysia, International School Kuala Lumpur is one of the renowned schools that offer the course. You might find that most colleges or private universities do not offer this course probably because it is not so popular among all other courses, even if this course has been offered from more than 30 years from Europe. Hence, international schools offer this course for continuity purposes where students can continue after they finish their ‘O’ levels.

The duration of this course is 2 years and due to its fees which are more costly compared to other pre-university courses (ranging from RM25,000 to RM50,000, depending where you enroll), you will most likely opt for other cheaper courses unless you are ready to spend the money and time.
One of the main thing about this course is that it is quite complicated to complete. Furthermore, before you actually get into this, you will most likely need to sit for an entry examinations. Take note that because this is an international qualification and is recognized throughout Europe, you can expect that it is not easy to get into the course. Unlike most pre-university programs where you only need 5 credits which must include English Language and Mathematics, you will need to have these credits before you are considered for the entrance test.

Once you pass the entrance program, you will then be required to take 6 modules where 3 of the modules must be from the Higher Level or HL and the rest from the Standard Level or SL. The modules are grouped into areas like Language, Humanities, Mathematics, Second Language, Experimental Science and Arts. Apart from that you will also be required to finish 150 hours of service-oriented activities and then complete an essay based on a supervised research area. On top of that, you will also be required to take up theory of knowledge course where you have to be involved very much in critical thinking.
