There are quite a large array of choices when it comes to Pre-University courses. Of course, one of the most common ones that you usually hear about is the “A” Levels. This is equivalent with the local STPM (Sijil Tinggi Pelajaran Malaysia). This is one of the qualifications which our parents would be very much familiar with, especially when the word GCE (General Certificate of Education) is mentioned.
The examination is held annually, very much like our education system here in Malaysia. The ‘A’ Levels is recognized for many years and internationally. If you pass this level, you are qualified to apply to any British universities in the UK. This is because, the examinations are marked externally and hence the ‘A’ Levels is viewed as the de facto standard for entry to their institutions. Apart from that, ‘A’ levels are also recognized in many other countries like Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong and such, all of which have had a large influence of the British education system.
In the ‘A’ Levels, there are various modules which you can take like Accounting, Law, Sociology, Economics and such. If you are thinking of pursuing a more Science oriented degree, then you could enroll into modules like Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics. Otherwise, for the more Arts oriented, English Literature, General Paper and Thinking Skills are offered.
The format of the examination for the ‘A’ Levels is such that there are 2 modes known as the AS and A2 exams, all of which you must pass both to be qualified. In order to enroll into this course, you will have to obtain at least a Credit pass in the SPM (Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia) or ‘O’ Levels or its equivalent. Some are not particular about the Credit in the subjects while most will require you to have a Credit in at least Mathematics, Science and English Language. This is vital because the course is conducted in English Language and you will have to write the examinations in the language as well.
Wherever you go or may be, if you hold an ‘A’ Levels certificate, you pretty much have a ‘passport’ of entry although it might not be too well received with the American Universities. We will tell you more about what the American Degree Programmes are later.
