Pre-University Courses - What are they?

It is a difficult decision to make really, if you just finished your SPM or ‘O’ Levels or its equivalent and have absolutely no idea what to do next. You envy your classmates who seemed to know the next step so confidently. Some has moved on into Information Technology, some into Medicine, some into Accounting and such, but you are somehow lost.

You do not want to get into a course as yet because you do not want to be ‘trapped’. At least not yet. So you are thinking, what your options are?

All the different acronyms like ‘A’ Levels, SAM, ICPU, ADP seemed to make sense but what are their difference. Worry not, we will ‘educate’ you in all of these. If you are unsure about what you should be doing as you have not yet determine your area of interest, then you should go for a more generic course. Think of it as a ‘driving license’. That means you must pass this level if you are thinking of pursuing a degree.

Most Pre-University qualifications get you into degrees in most fields but in certain cases, you will be required to obtain a particular field like Science if you are intending to pursue a degree in medicine for instance. The most important thing about a pre-university course is that passing this level means you are ready for an undergraduate course. Different courses have different passing criteria so you have to be careful when choosing which course to take.

One of the set-back though is that, as compared to specialized courses, generic pre-university courses might not offer all the modules which prepares you for your degree. For example, you could have passed your ‘A’ Levels where you took Economics, Law, Sociology but when you actually move to a degree in Information Technology, your mathematical skills might have deteriorated. So you would need to brush up on certain skills when you progress.
All degree course require you to have some sort of pre-university qualifications prior to enrolment and hence you would need to consider all options. Courses like these are extremely useful if you are not thinking of specializing yet but might have its drawback especially in terms of modules learnt and time spent.
