Most people would like to know what is the point of having a foundation course and you learn in there. The main issue about a Foundation course first is that it is ‘Feeder’ course. This means, it is meant to feed something and in this context it is meant to prepare you for something harder in the upper levels. Of course the case in point here would be the undergraduate level.
A foundation course is almost the same as previously known as a Certificate course. That means, if you come across something like Certificate in Information Technology, it basically means the same thing. But first things first, whether it is foundation or certificate, the modules you will learn in this course are those that gives you a glimpse of what is to come in the next level. You will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the course before enrolling although some pre-requisites are mandatory. In IT, it is always mathematics and in Medicine of course Science is required.
What are the prerequisites?
Most institutes require 5 credits in the ‘O’ Level qualifications. Of course, in the Malaysian context, we are referring to the SPM. Depending on which country you are from, you will be required to possess the necessary qualifications before you can actually be qualified to take the course. All institutes will use the British ‘O’ levels as the benchmark, so you will know what is needed from you before you can actually ‘survive’ the course.
The reason for the pre-requisites is because you will need to know simple calculations or grammar before you can take this course which is important because language is needed as it is used as the medium. Calculation is to ensure that logic and arithmetic can be preserved. Let’s just take a Foundation in Information Technology as an example. You must have a credit in Mathematics in order to take this course because the core of IT is in programming which is not mathematical but uses arithmetic expressions.
While this won’t be taught in great lengths at this level, you will be exposed to them in order for you to grasp the higher concepts when you move to the degree level. The foundation course teaches you the fundamental concepts, the basics of what the area of expertise is. that means, you can start without knowing anything about IT and by the time you finish, you would know how the computer works and why it works the way it does. You will be educated in what the various specializations are in the particular field so that you can major when you move to the undergraduate level. As mentioned earlier, it gives you the preparation you need to pursue further later. Think of the foundation as your primary school, and primary comes from the word ‘prime’ which means the most prioritized. Without the primary, you cannot get to the second level known as the ‘secondary’.
