If you just finished your SPM, you will feel that it is time for you to shine. The world is your oyster, it is up to you how you want to go about excelling or propelling into the future. The scary thing is, whatever you do will have its effect on your future, and hence the pressure.
For most people, it would be good if you have more time. But sometimes time is not what you can afford to lose, so you choose between going straight into what you like which is why most institutes around today provides what is known as foundation courses.
I will start with talking about foundation courses and then in my later entries will tell you more about the more ‘generic’ ones like A Levels and such. The most important thing about foundation course is first you must know what you like to do. If it is Information Technology then you will consider a Foundation in Information Technology course, if you are into design then a Foundation in Design. Take very important note of this, by enrolling into a foundation course, you are saying that you know for sure what you want to do later so once you are in the course, you will continue in the later stages in the same field.
If I want to change, is that possible?
Very seldom will there be any foundation courses which gives you a choice to change to another course. The thing is, foundation courses are designed in such a way that the institution wants you to continue and further your studies with them. So enrolling in the foundation course will more or less ensure that they ‘capture’ you in the undergraduate levels later. For example, once you finish your Foundation in Information Technology there will usually be an array of choices for you to continue in the degree level, for example BSc in Computer Science, BSc in IT, BSc in Software Engineering. In fact, they would also provide you with some bridging choices like BSc in Business in Information Technology or BSc in Electronic Commerce which usually requires you be well versed in some business modules but appreciate the core in Information Technology.
As mentioned, unless you are thinking of embarking into something totally different, you could be exempted from the foundation course if you are going to move to another course, (as per the example above, maybe to BSc in Marketing). This is usually possible if you are going to continue in the same institution. If you want to move to another institute, then it might just be impossible.
Therefore, it is vital that you decide before studying in a Foundation course. If you are not sure or have absolutely no idea what you want to do, then you should not take the foundation course at all
